Philosopher, artist, and handpress fine printer, Alessandro Zanella, passed away unexpectedly last week. Zanella had worked with Richard-Gabriel Rummonds at the Plain Wrapper Press before going on to found Ampersand Press. His studio, located near Verona, boasts a beautiful 1854 Stanhope handpress that Zanella used to both hand-print limited edition books and to teach workshops.
The most recent publication from Ampersand is Poesie Verticali by Maria Luisa Spaziani (2009). The book consists of fourteen poems by Spaziani, a brief note from the printer, seven illustrations by Marina Rib and an engraving on the cover.
